Plant Natives
Many members of the Suncoast Native Plant Society enjoy growing native plants. This enjoyment comes from a love of Florida's natural heritage, and a desire to create landscapes that protect that heritage
By planting the right plant in the right place, we can save water, reduce pesticide use, reduce fertilizer requirements, and attract wildlife. We also get plants that are unique and special to the region in which we live.
This page provides resources that can assist both new and experienced Florida gardeners
Choosing the right plants
The Florida Native Plant Society website provides a lists of plants by county, that are native to that county. It also provides a summary of the basic site requirements for each plant. Click on the link below to access that list.
Finding Plants
Few natives are carried by "big box" stores in this area. Here are some hints and places to find them.
- Attend SNPS meetings. We have a plant "auction" at each meeting and you can acquire plants for much less than typical retail cost
- Attend the USF Botanical Gardens plant sales, held twice each year in spring and fall. SNPS has an extensive booth at this sale.
- To find retail nurseries that specialize in native plants, visit the Association of Native Nurseries website: afnn.org
- To find wildflower seeds, visit the Florida Wildflower Seed Coop website: floridawildflowers.org
